Woman Sentenced for Letting Son Drown While Playing Games on Facebook
Any Facebook user knows how addicting some of the games provided on the website can be, whether its through first-hand experience or just by observing one of your Facebook "friends" playing some farming game for seventy-two solid hours and posting every action on their wall for the world to see. While being addicted to a computer game of any type may seem like a harmless addiction, it was anything but for a northern Colorado woman who let her thirteen month- old son drown on September 20 of last year when she left him in a bathtub alone while she went to check her status and play games on Facebook. She was sentenced to ten years in prison.
Although the woman was a candidate for alternative sentencing, also known as probation, the judge and prosecutors denied her that luxury because they did not want to underplay the seriousness of her crime. The judge informed the woman that although she did not intentionally drown her son and that she was not a bad person for allowing it to happen, that did not mean her actions weren't criminal.
The truth is that many individuals accused and convicted of crimes are not bad people at all, but merely made one or two bad decisions that landed them in trouble with the authorities. Unfortunately, even those with the best intentions can end up making one bad decision or losing focus for a very brief period of time and find themselves facing extremely serious charges as the woman did here.
