Student Steals $60,000 Worth of Textbooks From College
With the outrageous prices that colleges charge for new and used textbooks and the less-than-vigilant security that often surrounds college bookstores, there can be no doubt that cash-strapped college students across the country steal textbooks and resell them in order to make a little cash on the side. Given the way that textbooks are often sold and resold between students, it would be almost impossible to tell whether or not a book that had been taken from a bookstore was one that was stolen or purchased legitimately. Therefore, textbook theft goes largely undetected at most college campuses.
Unfortunately for a Scott Community College student in Iowa, his textbook theft did not go unnoticed, largely due to the fact that he stole approximately $60,000 dollars worth of textbooks (which any college student would know is at least ten textbooks) and tried to resale them to local pawn shops. With such a large number of books being taken, it was more likely that the student would get caught, and he faces felony theft charges. In Tennessee, theft in such a large amount would leave the man facing a Class B or C felony charge and looking at a substantial amount of jail time.
Theft is a common offense in Tennessee, but the facts of every case and the amounts of money involved are always different. Do not face any theft charge without the aid of an experienced East Tennessee criminal defense attorney to assist you in evaluating your case and achieving a fair resolution in your trial.
