Why You Shouldn't Beat Your Girlfriend in Public...

Anyone looking for an example of how life imitates art need look no further than this blog article. New Yorker David Williams was enjoying one of his favorite outdoor activities, which unfortunately consisted of beating up his girlfriend, last Friday at around 8 p.m. in the Bronx when a Dirty Harry movie broke out right there on the sidewalk. According to reports, a passer-by noticed that a man was beating the stuffing out of his girlfriend right in the middle of the sidewalk (which is an unusual sight to behold even in New York) and walked up to ask the guy what his problem was. That was when things started to escalate.

Mr. Williams, who had a rap sheet consisting of ten domestic-violence related arrests did not take too kindly to being interrupted mid-beating and got in the passer-by's face, telling him to mind his own business. The passer-by apparently responded by drawing out his handgun, shooting Mr. Williams right above the left eye, and strolling off into the sunset, Eastwood-style. Mr. Williams was transported to the hospital, but would not survive. Police are reportedly looking for the passer-by turned vigilante, but have not yet located the man. It will be interesting to see what, if any, charges the man will face should he be identified.

"Vigilante" isn't just the coolest-sounding word in the English language; it also happens to be a legitimate defense to criminal charges in some instances. With regard to the above-scenario, the passer-by could legitimately assert the defense of self-defense in Tennessee by claiming that he thought his action was necessary to prevent the death of the female victim. If you think self-defense of yourself or another may be a legitimate defense to charges you are facing, or if you just want to discuss the charges against you in general, contact a skilled East Tennessee criminal defense attorney to discuss your case.
