Drug Roundup Takes Place in Claiborne County
According to reports, a major “drug roundup” got underway in Claiborne County this morning when officers with the Claiborne County Sheriff's Office, Tazewell Police Department and agents with the Eighth Judicial Drug Task Force began executing capias warrants that were issued by the Claiborne County Grand Jury against 26 suspected drug dealers. Many of the suspects are reportedly facing charges of selling controlled substances and many are charged with doing so in a drug-free school zone. Authorities are also confiscating several vehicles that were allegedly used in the sale and delivery of the narcotics. Most of the suspects who are rounded up will be looking at felony charges which carry the threat of at least one year in prison.
Charges relating to the sale and delivery of drugs often present tough cases for the defendant to contest in court, especially where an informant is used that is often able to provide direct evidence that an individual may be dealing drugs. Just because such cases are tough, however, does not mean that they are impossible, and a skilled criminal defense attorney can assist defendants facing such charges in discrediting or excluding the evidence and demonstrating the defendant’s innocence. This may include showing that the defendant possessed the drugs with no intent to sell them (a lesser crime) or showing that the defendant was not actually guilty of any drug-related offense but has simply been implicated by association. Tennesseans who find themselves facing drug-related charges should contact an experienced Tennessee criminal defense attorney immediately for assistance in contesting the charges.
